My name is Matteo Grasso, I’m a filmmaker and I’ve been working for the last months on my short film titled The Small Thoughts of Arthur Klein. The screenplay has been written by Katerina Papanastasatou.

The short addresses themes such as vanity, the transition from youth to adulthood, self-discovery, all seen through the lens of humor and farce.

What is the short movie about?

In a Berlin bar turned makeshift film set, delusional young director Arthur Klein sets out to shoot The Last Days of Claudia Ivone, a “revolutionary” film about a mythical terrorist, made without script, sound, or plan. Surrounded by an accidental crew of artists, drifters, and skeptics, Arthur preaches cinematic purity while chaos quietly takes over.

What begins as an experiment in “truth” becomes a spiraling circus of egos, spilled drinks, and improvised philosophies. Arthur mistakes confusion for genius, pain for passion, and every technical failure for proof of authenticity. When he commits to shooting on fragile 16mm film, he crosses a point of no return: the revolution must now be real, or burn.

For a brief, electric moment, it looks like triumph, before the unthinkable happens: the reel literally burns. Arthur’s masterpiece turns to ash, and with it his illusion of control.

In the quiet that follows, stripped of slogans and theories, he faces what the camera never could: himself. Beside him, Sophie, the actress who saw through his performance all along, offers a simple gesture of connection.

The Small Thoughts of Arthur Klein is a tragicomic portrait of creative vanity and accidental grace-a love letter to cinema, and to the beautiful mess of those who try to make it.

Mi chiamo Matteo Grasso, sono un filmmaker e negli ultimi mesi ho lavorato intensamente al mio cortometraggio intitolato 'The Small Thoughts of Arthur Klein'. La sceneggiatura è stata scritta da Katerina Papanastasatou.

Questo cortometraggio affronta temi come la vanità, il passaggio dalla giovinezza all’età adulta e la scoperta di sé, il tutto osservato attraverso la lente dell’umorismo e della farsa.

Di cosa parla il cortometraggio?

In un bar di Berlino trasformato in un improvvisato set cinematografico, il giovane e illuso regista Arthur Klein decide di girare The Last Days of Claudia Ivone, un film “rivoluzionario” su una mitica terrorista, realizzato senza sceneggiatura, senza suono e senza un piano. Circondato da una troupe improvvisata di artisti, vagabondi e scettici, Arthur predica la purezza del cinema mentre il caos prende lentamente il sopravvento.

Ciò che inizia come un esperimento di “verità” si trasforma in un circo di ego, bicchieri rovesciati e filosofie improvvisate. Arthur scambia la confusione per genio, il dolore per passione e ogni incertezza tecnica per una prova di autenticità. Quando decide di girare su fragile pellicola 16mm, la scelta diviene irreversibile: la rivoluzione ora deve essere reale, oppure bruciare.

Per un breve elettrico istante sembra arrivare il trionfo, ma poi l'impensabile accade: la pellicola prende letteralmente fuoco. Il capolavoro di Arthur si riduce in cenere e con esso la sua illusione di controllo.

Nel silenzio che segue, spogliato di slogan e teorie, Arthur si ritrova ad affrontare ciò che la macchina da presa non ha mai potuto immortalare: se stesso. Accanto a lui c’è Sophie, la sola a capire cosa c'è dietro la maschera e che è pronta ad offrirgli un semplice gesto di intesa.

The Small Thoughts of Arthur Klein è un ritratto tragicomico della vanità creativa e della grazia accidentale: una lettera d’amore al cinema e al meraviglioso caos di chi prova a farlo.
