Who is Skye? Skyes Story

Skye Whitfield has a rare neurological duplication, 7p22.1. This affects her ability to learn, speak and move. She is one of only 17 in the world with this condition.

Furthermore, she has been battling a rare cancer for most of her life, Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Diagnosed at 2 years old, she has endured four cycles of chemotherapy lasting years. Currently, 8 years old, she is battling like a warrior, enduring levels of pain and hardship that is difficult to comprehend.

She is fed through and nasogastric tube, 3 times a day.

This year she has learned to swim independently with a float vest, continuing to apply herself and learn new things. Demonstrating what is possible when faced with great adversity. We can all look to Skye for inspiration to endure the problems we all face in life.

Skye takes great pleasure in sunflowers, the colour yellow and climbing.

All proceeds will go directly towards Skye Whitfield and her ongoing therapies and care.

I spent the month of February 2023 in a coma on life support. On a much-needed trip away, I developed a staphylococcus aureus infection called septic arthritis, which quickly progressed to sepsis and type 1 respiratory failure. The pneumonia caused a massive effusion and led to acute respiratory distress syndrome. Placing the drain for the effusion, I had a pneumothorax.

~ 50% of people survive this medical predicament.

Why am I trying to complete a 100km ultramarathon 12 months after a month-long coma?

To cultivate self-belief, open-mindedness and bump up to the outer limits of my capabilities.

We are all capable of so much more than we think we are and I refuse to let my limitations of self get in the way of cultivating my self-belief once more.
