Directed by MFA candidate Delia Dumont, this bold, surreal, and poetic play dives deep into themes of trauma, transformation, and the fractured relationship between humans and the natural world. It’s a haunting, visceral work that blends fairy tale, psychological drama, and political allegory—all through Churchill's signature language and theatrical experimentation.

As a thesis production, this piece is not only a capstone of artistic training, but also a platform for collaboration with emerging designers, performers, and technicians. Together, we're building a world that is both otherworldly and urgently human.

A Note from the Director

It was the Fall of 2022 when I decided it was time for a change.

Up until that point I had lived and made art in the same city I was born in - Bucharest, Romania. I had studied theatre directing, was working as a professional photographer and, together with a dear friend, we were laying the foundation for what was to become Wild Poppy Films - a film production company dedicated to supporting international artists.

But I knew to become a better storyteller, I needed to expand my perspective - New York City was calling. And so, i’ve decided to pursue and MFA in Theatre Directing and applied to Columbia University in one night. I was curious about the American ways of making theatre and eager to learn new ways of thinking about performance.

I am now on the cusp of my third and final year at Columbia and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities and lessons the past two years have given me. I have had the chance to learn from brilliant artists I had only admired from the other side of the world - Anne Bogart, Brian Kulick, Katie Mitchell, Saheem Ali and Carey Perloff. Among the Greeks, Chekhov, Shakespeare, new play development and opera, we also studied Caryl Churchill’s plays, an author I had less knowledge of. Her intricate language and economy of storytelling opened up a new way of approaching scripts for me. But I somehow placed directing one of her plays a little further down the line. Little did I know that ‘a little further’ meant only a year and a half.

I was hungry for a play that asked the questions my generation is dealing with; a play that reflected the fears, the uncertainty, but also the zest for life that I see reflected in the people around me. The play had to be like us: bold, intelligent and a little strange. That’s when ‘The Skriker’ came upon my desk. I read the four-page monologue that opens the show and I instantly knew - this was the challenge that represented the completion of my time at Columbia.

‘The Skriker’ drops the audience in the center of a world in decay. Two young women are navigating early motherhood while The Skriker, an ancient and damaged spirit, turns their wishes into curses. The story is told through multiple ways of expression: intricate language, music, movement and an ensemble of dark folklore inspired creatures. It’s a play that needs to be experienced, that disturbs but also comforts. It demands a conversation about the future we’re currently heading towards and the changes we could make to alter its course.

I have gathered an incredible group of artists from various backgrounds, but with a similar inkling for the strange and thought-provoking. I am grateful to be able to tell this story together with them.

This performance represents the culmination of my time at Columbia and the beginning of my career in New York City and beyond. It is as much an achievement for me as it is for the people back home who have raised me - blood or chosen family.

Toamna anului 2022 a fost momentul în care am decis că am nevoie de o schimbare.

Până în acel moment am trăit și creat în același oraș în care m-am născut - București, România. Studiasem Regie de Teatru, lucram ca fotograf profesionist și, împreună cu o bună prietenă, puneam bazele a ceea ce urma să fie Wild Poppy Films - o casă de producție de film independentă, dedicată susținerii artiștilor internaționali.

Știam, însă, că pentru a mă putea desăvârși ca povestitor de meserie, este necesar să îmi măresc orizonturile - New York City mă chema. Așa că am decis să aplic la cursurile de Master în Regie de Teatru din cadrul Columbia University și am scris și trimis aplicația într-o singură noapte. Eram curioasă să aflu despre modul American de a face teatru și eram nerăbdătoare să descopăr noi feluri de a privi lumea spectacolului.

Acum sunt pe cale să încep cel de-al treilea și ultimul an de studii la Columbia și nu pot decât să fiu foarte recunoscătoare pentru oportunitățile și lecțiile pe care mi le-au dăruit ultimii doi ani. Am avut ocazia să învăț de la artiști pe care obișnuiam să îi admir doar de la distanță, de pe cealaltă parte a lumii - Anne Bogart, Brian Kulick, Katie Mitchell, Saheem Ali și Carey Perloff. Printre autorii greci, Cehov, Shakespeare, texte noi și operă, am studiat și piesele scriitoarei britanice Caryl Churchill, autoare cu care nu eram familiară. Limbajul complex și economia intrigii din textele studiate mi-au deschis perspectiva asupra unor noi moduri de gândire în ceea ce privește spectacolul de teatru. Totuși, mi-am spus că voi avea șansa să regizez un astfel de text mult mai târziu. Se pare că acest ‘mult mai târziu’ nu avea să fie decât un an și jumătate.

În căutarea textului pentru dizertație, simțeam nevoia unei piese care să genereze întrebări cu care generația mea se confruntă în acest moment; o piesă care să reflecte incertitudinea, frica, dar și pofta de viață pe care o observ în oamenii din jurul meu. Un text care să ni se asemene: îndrăzneț, inteligent și cu o notă de straniu. Astfel am dat peste ‘The Skriker’. Mi-a fost suficient să parcurg monologul de patru pagini care deschide piesa și am știut - aceasta este provocarea care va completa anii de studiu la Columbia.

‘The Skriker’ nu oferă prea mult context, ci plonjează spectatorul în mijlocul acțiunii, al unei lumi aflate în descompunere. Două tinere se confruntă cu rolul de mamă în timp ce The Skriker, un spirit antic și deteriorat, le transformă dorințele în blesteme. Povestea este conturată cu ajutorul mai multor forme de limbaj: replici complexe, muzică, mișcare și creaturi inspirate dintr-un folclor întunecat. Este un spectacol ce trebuie trăit, care deranjează dar și alină; un spectacol care generează un dialog despre viitorul spre care ne îndreptăm și ce putem face ca să îi schimbăm traiectoria.

Am reușit să adun alături de mine un grup de artiști extraordinari, cu experiențe variate, dar care împărtășesc aceeași poftă pentru povești stranii care te pun pe gânduri. Sunt recunoscătoare că pot spune această poveste împreună cu ei.

Acest spectacol culminează experiența mea la Columbia University și reprezintă începutul carierei mele în New York City și nu numai. Reprezintă o reușită atât pentru mine, cât și pentru oamenii de acasă care ’m-au crescut’ - fie ei rude, prieteni sau mentori.
