While the rest of us felt relatively safe in our homes in bed, a family of five was suddenly terrified by the smoke and flames of their house on fire. This family of five found themselves rousted out of the house fearing not only for their safety, but were also shaken and distraught as they watched helplessly as fire consumed the possessions they held dear - - memories, important personal documents, medical equipment, clothing and food.

On Sunday, June 18, 2023 at approximately 8:30 pm, Guillermo Silva, 55, and his wife, Maria, 51, hurriedly escaped with their daughter, Jennifer, 24, and two sons, Pedro, 21, and John, 20 into the streets of their neighborhood. They witnessed the heartbreaking destruction of all their life essentials and family mementoes.

Now, Guillermo, Maria, Jennifer, Pedro and John share the burden of loss - and the daunting task of rebuilding their lives after a devastating fire. Thankfully, there were no loss of lives, but the monumental and heartbreaking task of putting together what little they had left to push on with their lives is much like starting over after any destructive event like a war, a hurricane or tornado.

The family has already met life's challenges. Dad Guillermo is a diabetic and unemployed, yet he is there for his family. Pedro sadly lost all of his medical equipment including his wheelchair, shower chair, stroller and medical supplies.

Mom Maria is severely asthmatic and struggles to control her blood pressure while she cares for the older of her two sons, Pedro, who has cerebral palsy. He neither walks, nor talks, nor eats through his mouth. Yet, Pedro has the unconditional love of his family, who sees to his every need - including the love of his siblings, Jennifer and John, who are the young providers of the family and who must now secure safe and affordable housing for five.

They say that we are given challenges to make us stronger and to prepare us for a greater reward after our stint here on earth, but whatever our beliefs, the five Silva family members could use a break. They could use a share of love from the community and the world around them. Please help them once again feel safe and protected in a new home.
