The Sea Turtles of Mahahual

Hi, this is Rex Farley and I'm trying to raise money to protect and promote the sea turtles around Mahahual.Mexico. This has been an ongoing passion of mine for years. I just returned from Mahahual where I took part in 5 of the beach cleanups as well as 4 night watches for turtles trying to nest. Fortunately, we found 4 nests and a few more attempts, but this time also showed me the serious need the turtles have for our help.

Loggerhead and Green sea turtles arrive in the Mahahual area every summer in early May to lay their eggs. But after hatching, only one in 2,000 of these endangered baby turtles survive to adulthood. Poaching, pollution, and climate change make the odds of survival worse each year.

Fortunately, we can act today to increase their chance of survival.

Aak Mahahual is a non-profit started by my friend, Victor Rosales, dedicated to protecting these sea turtles. Our volunteers patrol the nesting beaches for pochers and predators. We gather critical nesting data. We educate the local population about sea turtles. And our beach cleanups remove thousands of kilograms of trash from the nesting areas each year. The work of Aak Mahahual ensures the best chanch of survival for these baby sea turtles.

This season, already, Aak volunteers have completed 6 beach cleanups in the 5 loggerhead turtle nesting areas. April 1, 15, 22, & 29, May 3, & 8th. In this short time. we collected over 3,305 kilograms of a variety of plastics, foam, metal, and other trash types washing in from countries around the world.
