They've Survived the Worst. Now They Need Somewhere to Heal.
For over two decades, dogs have been my purpose. I built my life’s work, Dog Dialogue, around understanding them — and the longer I’ve done this, the more my heart has been pulled toward the ones with no one. The forgotten ones. The angels who’ve been neglected, abused, and abandoned.
Here’s what I’ve learned: when a dog comes straight out of cruelty, neglect, or the chaos of a pound, they arrive carrying enormous trauma. They’re shut down, hyper-vigilant, terrified of a world that has only ever hurt them. Before they can bond with a family, before they can trust, before they can even begin to learn what safety feels like they need to decompress. And that takes specialised skills, time, and above all, a calm and quiet environment. Without that crucial first step, even the most loving home in the world is an uphill battle for everyone involved.
The current system for dogs in these situations skips this step entirely, and then it’s the dogs who pay the price.
I knew the only real answer was a sanctuary; a peaceful place where rescue dogs could be taken straight out of trauma and given the time and space to simply exist without fear. A place where they could learn that people aren’t something to be afraid of. A place where they could heal first, and then be matched with the right family, ready to thrive.
So I worked. Twelve-hour days, seven days a week, year after year, trying to save enough to buy a rural property in Western Australia. But prices kept climbing, and my dream kept slipping further away. I was exhausted, but I refused to quit.
Then the universe sent me Sim.
I’d worked with Sim and her beautiful rescue dog a couple of years earlier, and she knew my dream inside and out. One day she reached out to ask how I was going. When I told her the truth, that I was working every waking hour and still falling behind, she told me she wanted to help. She would be the benefactor. That moment will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Together, Sim and I searched for properties, laughed and cried our way through dozens of them. I kept telling her, “I’ll know when it’s the right one.” And finally, we found it. Sim blew her entire budget to secure it, because she knew — like I did — that it was perfect. We call it Utopia.
We have the land. Now we need fencing.
We’re in the process of establishing South West Homestead Sanctuary as a registered charity, with that status expected in August. But the dogs can’t wait that long, and neither can the fencing. Every dollar raised here goes directly to securing the property so we can start bringing rescues home, giving them somewhere to finally decompress, heal, and find the loving families and full lives they have always deserved.
If you’ve ever said “I wish I could help rescue dogs” — this is your chance.
Please give what you can, and share this with every dog lover you know.
These angels have waited long enough.
