Mr. Sam Davis was a passionate student-athlete who understood that he had to display tenacity and leadership to be competitive on the field. He also learned that the most critical aspect of playing the game that he loved was to be academically astute. However, he became a successful college and a NFL football player and team captain when he learned to put those two aspects together.
Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, Mr. Davis knew what it meant to struggle. He was determined that he would do whatever it took to meet life’s challenges and accomplish his goals while never forgetting what it took to get him there. Mr. Davis, a family man, and entrepreneur, who walked in compassion, humility, and excellence, not only wanted to be successful, but he also wanted to serve as a beacon of light by creating a legacy for those who aspired to follow in his footsteps.
Mr. Davis was a lineman who played 13 seasons in Pittsburgh (1967-79), mostly as a starting left guard throughout the 1970s. Davis, an offensive co-captain from 1971-79, was credited with playing a significant role in the Steelers win over the Cowboys. an AFC conference and four-time NFL Super Bowl champion (1975-76, 1979-80) with the Pittsburgh Steelers and a proud graduate of Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina. To honor his accomplishments, Allen University retired his jersey in 2005, and today, the Allen University General Alumni Association wishes to celebrate his legacy by contributing to the academic & athletic success of young men and women who aspire to further their education while playing sports. Donating $57 (Mr. Davis' jersey number) or whatever amount you would like to contribute to his memorial scholarship fund will allow students access to the visibility of the acclaimed Allen University’s stellar academic and exceptional, athletic, band, and cheer programs.

The Sam Davis Memorial Fund will enable the General Alumni Association of Allen University, Inc., to independently establish initiatives capable of renewing an equal number of scholarships every four (4) years. The future will present a cadre of college graduates proudly proclaiming "The 57" membership.
