Hello!
I have the extremely exciting opportunity to join a team going to Zimbabwe in June to be a part of The Safe Birth Project. We strongly believe all women and families should have access to the safest possible care.
Zimbabwe is among the top five countries in southern Africa with the highest maternal mortality rates. Devastatingly, approximately 22.3% of babies don’t make it to one month old (Unicef, 2023).
This project began with my lovely friend and colleague Mary, who is from Zimbabwe herself. After coming to the UK to work as a midwife, she wanted to return to her home country and help improve maternal and neonatal outcomes with the knowledge she has gained.
The project began in April by delivering training to 4 groups of Zimbabwean midwives in obstetric emergencies and helping babies breath. The idea is to train the trainer so these Zimbabwean midwives can continue to train others and implement what they have learned.
Your money will sponsor me to cover the costs of joining the team in June (consisting of 4 midwives, 1 obstetric doctor and one nurse). We aim to assess and evaluate how the project is doing so far, offer support to the Zimbabwean trainers and deliver some ‘masterclasses’ on topics including helping babies breath and fetal hypoxia (oxygen deprivation in labour). We also hope to buy some much needed resources including 20ml syringes, weighing scales and catheters. Any money not spent will be donated directly to a cause in need once there.
Thank you so much in advance for your incredible support. I look forward to updating you about our experiences and project successes, of which there have already been many! Follow The Safe Birth Project here on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/1BPzPbW2Yx/
