The Roll Rumble: Support for Ella

Donation protected
The Roll Rumble is a fundraising event in support of Ella and Fiach.

This NoGi Brazillian Jiu Jitsu elimination tournament aims to raise funds for our beloved club members who are a couple going through the fight of their lives, dealing with Ella's cancer treatment.

Ella is 28 and has lived in Galway since 2012. She was first diagnosed with cancer in September 2021, specifically Low Grade Fibromyxoid Sarcoma. There is little known about this rare form of the disease. Sarcomas make up 5% of all cancers and hers, only 1% of all Sarcomas globally. Since her first diagnosis she has undergone two extensive knee surgeries to remove tumours, a tongue surgery and a leg amputation above the knee. Once she has recovered from these invasive events, she will face yet another surgery on her lungs to remove even more tumors.

The cancer is slow in growth which as a result makes it immune to both chemo and radiotherapy. Both processes target cells with high turnover rates which are not present in Low Grade Fibromyxoid Sarcoma. Ella still has time but tragically, the prognosis is ultimately terminal. The 5 year survival rate for this form of cancer is only 18%. We are hoping she'll have closer to 10 but the truth is, we just don't know. That's why we are stepping into the ring now to do all we can to help Ella with our main event, The Roll Rumble.

Picture this: 30 participants enter the arena of combat at 60 second intervals. Competitors are pitted 1v1 in BJJ matchups using their skills to force their opponent into submission or move them out of the ring entirely. It's a game of survival until a single winner is declared - who will then face the world champion at Wrestl..... No wait, that's something else.

How does it work? 3 dedicated floor spaces are on hand and entrants are drawn at random to compete in 1v1 noGi jiu jitsu matches. It's open weight, inter-gender and all fun for a good cause. Coaches, referees will be on hand to supervise the event and ensure safety and fair play

  • 30 competitors sit on the balcony and get one minute notice before they fight.
  • Every 60 seconds (truthfully, a little longer) a new challenger joins the rumble.
  • Every entrant gets their own cool entrance music and costumes are encouraged.
  • Cloaks are permitted but only for walkouts.
  • If mat 1 is not finished, they move to mat 2 and wait or compete.
  • Three mats will be available for spillover.
  • First person or winner of previous round starts on the ground.
  • Victory only by submission or forcing opponent out of bounds.
  • Winner stays on.
  • Last person standing wins.

And we have wild cards. In mismatch situations, refs can play uno reverse card so people switch positions etc. It's all good clean fun and and doesn't take it's self too seriously. In result of dead heats, refs can ask trivia questions to progress competition. No heel hooks/crucifix or gnarly subs! If you don't know what that means, maybe this competition is not for you.
