UPDATE FROM THE SUMMER: we surpassed our goals and expectations. The press release will be available in late August. Everyone will be both pleased and amazed!
We will be moving into a different facet of the project where we will still need the support of patrons. In August we will be able to detail some of that support in full.
UPDATE 2: We have passed 10% of our goal with a few months left to the summer. We are making final plans for this year, and all your support is going to be a big help for this research project.
UPDATE: Thank you all for your support so far! We are nearly at 5% of our goal, which is really exciting for just a couple days! If you are interested in our project our website is: Lough Key Project .
We are raising additional funding to support the 2019 archaeological project on the Rock of Lough Key, the MacDermot castle stronghold in north County Roscommon Ireland. The MacDermot were one of the major medieval Gaelic lordships in Ireland, and ongoing archaeological and historical analysis at Lough Key has uncovered a massive amount of information regarding settlement and society in medieval Ireland.

In 2019 excavations will begin on the Rock of Lough Key for the first time, and will hopefully highlight the medieval era of settlement by the MacDermots. We are very excited about the prospects given the outcome of our 2016 excavations on the mainland.
This funding will support the overall project. One of the challenges in planning an excavation of this scope is the "unknown" factor of not knowing what we will find. We anticipate that this could be a very fruitful excavation, and as such we could incur costs for post-excavation analysis that could be very daunting.
Additionally, our project has always been student-focussed, but in todays economic climate external funding for grants and scholarships for students to participate in projects like this are extremely limited if not non-existent. We train the next generation of archaeologists interested in medieval Ireland, but to do so requires support. Each student, for example, pays $3000 for fees related to the project in addition to airfare to Ireland for the project.
