Update: He was found today, April 11th, 2025, in need of medical attention for his mental health and his 3-week exposure to the cold, rain, and no food. BUT GOD KEPT HIM, AND HE IS ALIVE.
Hello, my name is Nique, Derrick's younger sister, and I’m reaching out with gratitude and continued hope. After nearly three agonizing weeks of searching, God has heard our prayers. My brother has been found and is now back with our sister. — but….his journey to healing is just beginning.
He lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, while my mom and I are in a different state. For the past few years, my brother has been battling with a mental illness, which started after a serious car accident that left him with a hint of amnesia. Through the years, he was getting better, but after the loss of our dad and other close relatives, he began to spiral again.
We thank God and everyone who kept us in their prayers and shared his flyer and prayed for his safe return…PRAYER IS A POWERFUL WEAPON, must I add. Though he is alive and safe, he is not okay. He is vulnerable and in need of/wanting care, structure, and consistent family support to get better.
This GoFundMe is focused on helping my mom and me travel to Milwaukee so we can be there physically to advocate for his treatment, and so that legal paper work can be signed so that we can fight for his care and so that we can stop running into red tape with the doctors telling us no they can’t do this or that because he’s an adult. We’re also wanting to find resources and begin building a stable support system around him. He currently doesn't have medical insurance or any other financial means due to his inability to work after the car accident and his mental health. With my mom's terminal illness and health needs, we currently don't have enough to get to the state of Wisconsin so that we can sign adequate papers to advocate on his behalf and help him get adequate medical services and care.
Sadly, mental health in black men is often ignored because of the stigma that is often attached to it and the difficulties in the area to get services established.
He is willing to accept help, and as a family, we are ready to help him rebuild his life, re-establish his peace, and help him get all the medical assistance he needs —but we are in dire need of help with getting there. As time is of the essence
Anything you can give—whether it’s a donation, a share, or a prayer—will help us take the following steps toward his recovery. No one will fight like a mother, and my mom is ready to be by his side to ensure he gets the help he deserves. So he can walk his purpose that God created for him
If there’s any information or concerns, you may contact my mom, Comekia.
