The Richter family is a family of 7, Alex(Dad), Kasie(mom), Jayson 18 (graduating this year), Addyson 15, Cali 13, Grayson 12, and Zane 5.
March 31st 2022, Kasie went into the hospital to have a routine atrial ablation done to help treat atrial fibrillation which is an abnormal heart rhythm. During the ablation, mistakes occurred which have caused a plethora of medical issues ever since.
Prior to March 31st, 2022, Kasie was a heathy ER nurse with no prior medical issues working 70+ hours a week in the ER because she loved her job. She never viewed her job as a job because she has a passion for helping people in all aspects of their lives and continues to help people even in her current circumstances.
Kasie attempted to continue to work after the procedure but unfortunately by June of 2022 she was really feeling the complications of the procedure and had to go on short term disability.
Alex was working in the Local 66 union, as a heavy equipment operator at the time. Kasie held the medical insurance at the time she went on disability and due to the nature of Alexs job, having unpredictable layoffs and insurance closures, he had to immediately start looking for another job. Alex found another job with stable hours, a little bit of overtime hours, and medical insurance, however, this job did come with a small pay cut but there was not many options at that moment in time.
Due to the original surgical mistakes, Kasie is unable to process food through her GI system. Her stomach and intestines are paralyzed so solid food is not broken down and absorbed like it should be. Due to this issue, Kasie has a chest port that she uses to administer TPN. Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is complete nutrition delivered intravenously to people who can’t use their digestive systems at all.
Over the past three years, Kasie has had over 500 doctor visits, many long hospital stays, and many surgeries. Due to Kasie being extremely high risk medically, most of the hospital stays, doctor visits, and all of the surgeries take place at Cleveland Clinics main hospital in Cleveland Ohio, which is about a three hour drive one way from her home.
Kasie had to have emergency open heart surgery in May 2023 due to a few unknown complications that were tied to the original procedure in March of 22. She has also had many abdominal surgeries in an attempt to help eat solid food. The most recent surgery was in September of 2023 and during that surgery, Kasie had her large intestine removed, a temporary ileostomy placed, and a small bypass. During that surgery, the by the grace of God, the doctors found a malignant neuroendocrine tumor in her small intestine. They type of cancer that was found is only found in about 4% of the population before it is incurable.
Kasie is unable to take chemo for the neuroendocrine tumor due to the chemo needing to be digested through the stomach, in which Kasie’s stomach does not work.
Through all of this, Kasie and her family continue to praise God each day as they know he has a true purpose for her.
All donations will go to the family to help with everyday expenses from groceries, utilities, medications, medical bills, kids cost, and travel expenses.
