Hi, my name is Kim and I’m commonly known as the ‘hedgehog lady’. I’m a veterinary nurse and I’ve been supporting Mull’s hedgehogs for the last 6 years, whether that is rearing orphan hoglets, supporting young ones after mum has weaned them or overwintering autumn juveniles for release the following spring. Many of you have also contacted me for advice for those that don’t need direct care but residents have raised concerns about. I have funded my own further education to care for hedgehogs the best way possible given our geography and logistics. I’ve been supported by very kind donations over the years however, I feel this autumn will be busy! We have had a very successful breeding year and I predict an equally busy autumn/winter. My facilities are extremely limited now as I used to house them in a spare room in the house which is no longer available. I would like to raise money for an external shed which we can heat and store up to 4 hedgehog houses. I also need a microscope as parasites are the most common killer and the earlier the detection the better chance they have of treatment and survival. There are many other consumables that I’m now running low on which I would like to restock.
