Hi!
I’m Kait (aka @the_rehab_mama) and over the next 6 months I’ll be training to complete two events, the Forbes Sprint Triathlon in November and the Newcastle City Triathlon (Olympic distance) in February 2020.
3 years ago I suffered from Hyperemesis Gravidarum for the duration of my first pregnancy. This rare condition left me unable to work, depleted our savings, saw me being sick up to 40 times a day and as a result I lost 20% of my body weight in just a matter of weeks.
HG affects an estimated 1-2% of pregnancies, but with 309142 babies born in Australia in 2017, that means over 3000 mums lived through their HG nightmare. This number doesn’t factor in the Mums who weren’t able to continue with their pregnancies because of the serious risk HG posed to both mama and Bub.
To say these events will be a challenge is an understatement. I’ve never attempted a triathlon, I am currently 10 months postpartum, I’ve recently been diagnosed with stage 2 Pelvic Organ Prolapse, and while training I’ll also be getting back to the juggle of life as a working Mum. I currently don’t even own a bike, so needless to say the odds are a wee bit against me. But I want to show my two boys that they can achieve anything they want to, if they just try!
I would love it if you could join me in raising awareness of HG, and support Hyperemesis Gravidarum Australia in their work to provide the resources and care for Mums and their families in need. Your donations will be used to:
- Provide training for HG survivors to become volunteers and provide 1:1 support to fellow mamas suffering from HG.
- Establish an online hub to support HG mums and their families
- Support the day to day costs of operating a charity
- Help representatives attend conferences and exhibitions where they can further spread awareness of HG to health professionals and the general public
Not everyone is fortunate enough to be in a position to donate, but even contributing by talking about HG or giving me some moral support through this challenge would mean a great deal!
Thank you ☺️
