The Queen's Needle Costume Shop set up fund
Hi, My name is Monique Motil.
The time has come for me to share what I have been working so hard on as of late.
The Queen’s Needle, my my new costume sewing atelier (fancy word for workshop) Located on the Second Floor of Dark Garden Corsetry on Magazine Street in New Orleans. Specializing in custom costume construction, wedding and vintage alterations and project oriented sewing instruction.
Almost 30 years ago Autumn Adamme and I started Dark Garden corsets together with nothing but a sewing machine, tons of hard work and my one good credit card. When the time came for me to move on from the company and explore new projects I was sure to stay connected, I am so proud of how Dark Garden has continued to grow. We always dreamed of opening a shop in New Orleans and they have done it!
Two years ago I moved from San Francisco to New Orleans. My time as a professional costumer for Beach Blanket Babylon, the world's longest running musical comedy revue, was ending. The joy and vibrancy of New Orleans Mardi Gras costuming was calling to me. I gave away most of the things in my personal sewing shop; shelving, tables, so much fabric, supplies and most of my personal costumes. I packed up my Tiny Yaris and drove across the country just before the pandemic closed everything down.
Now I am starting again in the great space above Dark Garden. So many opportunities are presenting themselves. Now I just need to replace my supplies. I am asking for help so I may buy an Industrial sewing machine and serger, iron and ironing table, cutting table, shelving units, containers as well as all the various sundries involved in setting up a costume shop.
I have dressed hundreds of people in so many costumes for performances, dress up events and even weddings and special occasions. I know people have faith in me being able to do it again. After all, Its my passion to help people create that special look that let's them feel who they really are. #SmallBusinessRelief
