92-year-old company director Peter Minter is putting a lifetime of knowledge into print. Following his acclaimed 2014 memoir "The Brickmaker’s Tale", Peter has written a new book to mark the family’s 90th anniversary in Bulmer: "Brick, Bonds and Bowtells" - an accessible, richly illustrated introduction for enthusiasts and the general public, and a genuinely useful technical resource for architects, conservators, and construction professionals who need to understand a brickmaker’s perspective on the buildings they work on.
But there’s a challenge: Peter is determined that the book remain affordably priced, so it can reach the widest possible audience — students, hobbyists, and professionals alike, not just those who can afford a premium heritage title. He also wishes for sales of the book to go towards the family business - the Bulmer Brick and Tile Company, one of the last traditional brickyards in the UK. Brick making by hand has been listed as endangerd on the Heritage Crafts Red List for many years, with the company trying to preserve these skills whilst supplying handmade materials for conservation, restoration and repair projects on everything from Roman walls to Tudor palaces.
The costs of publishing, printing, storage, and distribution make that a difficult balance to strike without support.
That’s where you come in. A contribution — of any size — from individuals, trusts, or heritage societies would help offset these production costs and keep the book within reach of the people who need it most: the next generation who will carry this endangered craft forward.
Every donation is an investment in a skill that has survived for centuries — and in the buildings across Britain that depend on these skills still.
