Dystopia or utopia? You decide.

This episodic play follows the consequences of power and desire in modern day Britain.

It starts at the top and trickles down, each player a servant and master, with no care to who is beneath them.

A spa, a salon, a hairdressers’, and a bedroom.

Six people climbing the ladder and stepping on fingers as they go.

If you wanted something, what would you do, who would you hurt, to get it?

Who's behind Postcode?

We are the Postcode Lottery, a student-led production looking to make waves at the Edinburgh Fringe this August. Beginning life as a University of Manchester Drama Society production, the creative team have since become independent with the hopes to bring this show to a broader audience.

We are confident in the play's ability to inspire and entertain, and feel that its topical themes around the cost of living crisis and widening wealth disparity are felt nationwide. Through theatre we are able to shine a light on how these systems came to be, how they are maintained, and how a little bit of compassion and empathy can benefit us all.

Creative Team
An original play, written by exciting new playwright Alfie Pullum. No stranger to the Fringe, Alfie brought Baby Steps, a heartfelt introspection into loss of a family member, to the audiences of Edinburgh in 2023 to critical acclaim. Back then he was studying an undergraduate course in Drama which he has since graduated. However, he couldn't get enough and has since returned to complete a Master's in Playwriting.

Directed by the powerhouse of artistic vision and creative talent that is Maisie Bayliss, Postcode is brought to life. Previously director of Bull in 2024, Maisie's acumen for poignant performance, artistic movement sequences and holistic approach to directing elevate our production to new heights.

Our fantastic Production Designer, Rob Hall, is a student by day and a freelance artist and illustrator by night. He just loves making stuff, and his work has a habit of popping up in the places you’d least expect it. Rob has a massive passion for ensuring that art, especially theatre, is as accessible as it can be. Coming from a low-income background has influenced how he has been able to interact with theatre, and it’s his goal to remove one of the most expressive art forms from the clutches of the elite.

To allow the creative team to be freely creative, someone has to manage the less exciting tasks: the producer. Lexie Stefanou may be new to theatre production, but her ability speaks for itself with the success of the Manchester performances of Postcode in November last year. Her diverse professional background, including work in accounts and property management, as well as in Television and Events production, leads to a unique mix of skills, including organisation, financial literacy and navigating the creative industry.

Our creative team has already managed to shock, move and impress the audiences of Manchester with Postcode, and would love the opportunity to share our artistic vision with Edinburgh this summer.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Theatre and the arts industry as a whole are notorious for being hard to break into. Financial barriers, nepotism and the whims of markets all pose an obstacle for success, especially to those from low-income or minority backgrounds.

Storytelling – in one form or another – has existed for as long as human civilisation itself, yet only recently has this one universal form of expression become regarded as inaccessible or elitist due to the nature of modern economies. Theatre is for everyone, by everyone. A talented dramatist or performer shouldn't be hindered by their financial backround.

This was the line of thought that conceived the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the first place. It is a celebration of arts outside of the elite.

Our aim is to ensure that no member of our company has to pay out of pocket for the opportunity to perform at the Fringe. As you will see in the section below, all productions (even at a small scale) inevitably incur numerous vital costs, and your generosity will allow our team creative freedom to bring this important show to a wider audience without the worry of financial barriers.

Cost breakdown

The funds raised will go toward many different aspects of our production including:
  • Fringe registration fee
  • venue hire
  • publicity costs
  • costume & make-up
  • set & props
  • performer insurance
  • accomodation
  • transport (for cast, crew, props and set)

We have tried to keep our expenses as low as possible and are operating without returning a profit in mind.

Thank you for your generosity.
