The Pollywog Project
Donation protected
On the afternoon of December 31, 2016, our father/brother in attempt to stop his 17,000 pound service truck, blew out the ligaments of his left knee trying to avoid striking an elderly woman who had stepped out between parked vehicles. He was advised that rehab and recovery could take six months, he took this time to have his eyes, teeth and general health checked. The nightmare began.
Blood tests indicated tumor markers and he was found to have a 20 cm. tumor in his colon. Two surgeries, 28 radiation treatments and nearly nine months of chemo, he was declared free of cancer, although now disabled. Unable to continue working as a mechanic, he did take what jobs he could to make ends meet.
In May 2019, severe abdominal pains found him in the emergency ward and he was found to have indicators of another tumor. August of 2019, his doctor advised him that he had a tumor in his liver, that they could not biopsy. It would prove to be fatal, and without treatment, he had been given about a year to live.
Papa has six grandchildren, (seven in October), all eight years old or less and really would like to leave a legacy they will remember him by. He has the workspace, tools and the blueprints to build with them, a boat, but he no longer has the financial means to afford the dream. The Pollywog Project is born. (Pollywogs are the tadpoles that evolve into frogs.) His thinking is that by involving the grandkids in the small tasks, together, they can achieve large things.
The plan had been to be on the water by Labor Day..
(update) A surgeon has been found and with the help of a very specialized radiation protocol, the potential of a sixty percent chance of a life saving surgery.
The goal is to fund the boat project (The Pollywog ) and now to help with the travel and accommodations for the three trips to Vancouver and Kelowna.
If you can't help financially, totally understand, but if you could, would you share this plea amongst your contacts.
On behalf of Rick Kearns and family we thank you.
