The Plume follows journalist Franc Contreras as he returns to his Arizona hometown after four decades to uncover how deadly chemicals dumped from a military weapons factory destroyed his desert community’s main source of water, killing many of his neighbors and perhaps his own mother.
For decades, Tucson’s South Side has lived with the consequences of this toxic contamination long before the public was told. Today, families are still fighting to be heard.
The story of The Plume is featured in the Living With Injury exhibit at MOCA Tucson (Museum of Contemporary Art), running November 14, 2025 through September 2026. If you’re in Tucson, we invite you to visit the exhibit, scan the QR code, and learn more about the community’s decades-long fight for environmental justice.
