The Phoenix Era : Kristin & Misha's Recovery Fund

It'd already been a long week for us both.  Kristin had been heavily focused on her work.  I'd been neck-deep in making sure Roxbury Restaurant Week was going smoothly.  Attempting to turn a new leaf, and both exhausted, we turned in early.

Like most tragedies, time became an illusion and instincts, the only truth.

2:30am
Our fire alarm went off.

Thinking it was a pot on the stove, we woke up.  In a daze, I turned the light on and walked to the kitchen.  I didn't recall leaving the bathroom light on so I stopped in to turn it off.  That is when I noticed the bathroom window engulfed in flames.

"This is ridiculous, but I got it",  tends to be my reaction to most things.  After running through my mental checklist of necessary tools, I realized "I don't have this one".  Knowing the layout of the house, I knew the porch was compromised and there was no way I could handle this without a fire extinguisher.

After waking up Kristin and making sure we left the apartment I grabbed a shirt and started looking for Nala.  With the bathroom door open, the house filled up with fumes almost as soon as I made it to the kitchen.  With the electricity now shot I used my phone for light as I ran to each room, swallowing fumes and yelling at the top of my lungs to no avail.  Realizing I wouldn't see, couldn't breathe, and couldn't yell over smoke, it was just time to go.  "She's a rescue she'll find a way".

Kristin and I found each other on our 3rd-floor porch.  Looking down we saw the second-floor neighbors and the rest of the street.

Finding one another on the porch, the moment slowed down slightly, like coming up for air.  After a few breaths, we dove back in, slipping on soot we found the front door.

Sifting the rubble in the days that follow, its becoming clear how slim our chances for survival actually were, let alone Nala's.

The official cause of the fire is yet to be realeased.  We'll be sharing updates as they become avalible.
