The Outrage: A Queer Writers' Residency

My name is C. Julian Jiménez and I am a queer writer. After attending residencies and writers' groups I often found myself facing unique challenges. The feedback I craved was often silenced under a barrage of phrases like, "Your work is so brave!" and "This piece is so authentic!" While I appreciated the sentiments, the feedback received was diluted through these affirmations rather than true analysis of my writing. It seemed essential to explain Queerness in order for feedback to move beyond supportive words.

The Outrage was born out of a need for a space where queer writers can be in community, write, and share with one another for intentional and honest feedback. Queer writers are often faced with the challenge of explaining Queerness before receiving tangible notes. The Outrage is an environment for craft exploration by providing a safe space for risk-taking and imagination.

Housing, meals, travel, and resources are entirely free for writers. This year The Outrage will be hosted and partially subsidized by North American Cultural Laboratory (NACL.org). NACL is an artist-run, member-supported, nonprofit residency center dedicated to research and development in the performing arts. Located in Highland Lake, NY, two hours from New York City in the southwestern Catskill Mountains, the NACL complex includes a performance and rehearsal hall and adjacent artist residence. The grounds include a private yard and two wooded acres, providing opportunities to work or relax outdoors.

Space needs - $3000

Travel Stipend ($150 each) - $1200

Food for week - ($70 per playwright) - $560

Printing costs - $240
