Hi, I’m Eliza!
A few days ago, I managed to earn myself a 5” x 10” second-degree burn in the most “mom multitasking gone wrong” way possible. I was carrying a saucepan of boiling water to the sink, turned for a split second, and the water poured down my thigh.
I, like many of us, am currently without health insurance, and while I covered the initial visit out of pocket, I’m quickly realizing how expensive the ongoing healing process will be.
(trigger warning) When I first got burned, I was wearing leggings.. and when I pulled them off, I lost all the “safety skin” that would normally protect and heal. Even the nurse was stunned, it’s essentially an open wound of tissue and exposed nerves, making healing an even heavier step.
Until it begins to scab, I have to keep it clean, elevated, and dressed every 12 hours, and daily after that. I’m doing everything right, which is good, but the supplies are adding up fast.
Each dressing change requires two large gauze pads, ointment, and wrap. Just the gauze rolls alone run about $10 per box, and one box only lasts me about two days. I’m also unable to be at work, so balancing the expense with extended unpaid time off, is not sustainable.
If anyone is able to help by contributing, it would go directly toward keeping it clean and healing safely, while keeping my head above water.
I’d be so grateful for any support, truly, every bit makes a difference. thank you!
(also, I’m sorry for the photos posted if they are upsetting to anyone)
