The Ocean Acres Spay and Neuter Barbados Project

My name is Karen Whittaker, and I'm the founder and executive director of Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary in Barbados. Every day, we deal with dog and cat neglect, suffering, and abuse on our small island. The crux of the issue is overpopulation, driven by ignorance, lack of care, or the inability of people to care for their pets.

This poor girl is Margot; she deserved better. Margot gave her all to her puppies and the litter before and before that…. She has known nothing else. Despite her best efforts, her ‘owner’ allowed her puppies to become infested with maggots. A well-wisher called us, and we were able to rescue them all. Puppies and mum needed immediate, urgent care and hospitalization.

Margot's story is just one example of why spaying and neutering is the most important thing we can do. We want to change things for dogs like Margot and the thousands of cats and kittens who suffer. Through fundraising, we have already created our own on-site clinic space.

CAT STATS:

In only 7 years, one female cat can be responsible for an astounding 420,000 kittens.

DOG STATS:

A single female dog can be responsible for 67,000 puppies in her lifetime.
