THE OASIS - Pouch Cove Crag Fund
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Madison and I'm a climber, guide, and route developer from St. John's, NL. I was recently shown an area for a potential crag by my friend David, and for the last couple of weeks have been obsessing over the area and its potential. The rock is super unique, quite different from the popular crags around the corner in Flatrock. I see enormous potential in this area for 10-20 high-quality sport routes, as well as a handful of cracks that will go on gear. There is also interesting bouldering at the crag with room for dozens of problems.
Crag features:
-20 min drive from St. John's (parking for Pouch Cove Lion's Club)
-featured, blocky rock with a skin-friendly, slick texture
-steep, sustained climbing in an athletic style
-picturesque views and great swimming
-Walk-in access (no rappel necessary) with ~15 min approach
My goal is to equip all routes exclusively with 316L stainless hardware, as well as convenient lower-off anchors at the top, and perma-draws on steep and traversing sections. This would be the first crag in Newfoundland to have this standard, and I think it is a unique opportunity to do things right from the beginning.
Route developing is expensive! Especially with the specialized fixed hardware required to last in a marine environment, it adds up. Here is an example of the cost of a single route that requires one perma-draw to facilitate cleaning.
-12x Glue-in bolts x $10 = $120
-2x Tubes epoxy x $25 = $50
-4x Quicklinks x $10 = $40
-2 feet chain x $10/foot = $20
-2x Quick clips x $10 = $20
-1x Permadraw x $35 = $35
Route Total: $285
I cannot fund this project entirely myself, so please pitch in and help Newfoundland become the world-class rock climbing destination it deserves to be!
100% of the funds will be used directly for fixed hardware at the crag. As the routes are developed I will update Mountain Project and with all relevant beta on the routes.
I am also happy to accept donations in the form of bolts, cash, or e-transfer at [email redacted], Gofundme takes a 3% fee which can add up!
