Photo Stories From The Nyarugusu Camp

Hello Everyone!

During my visit to Africa, thanks to my love for nature and photography, I met a young photographer from Congo - Vainqueur Birembano. Vainqueur lives in Tanzania in the Nyarugusu Refugee Camp. Using only his mobile phone, he captures everyday events around the camp, complementing these images with interesting stories. His dream is to become a professional photographer and, through photography, to introduce the world to the stories of people living in a refugee camp.

I am trying to help him. I have created a website for him, which I manage, and I am preparing an exhibition for his photographs.

However, taking professional quality photos requires a professional quality camera and lens. It also requires a computer to process the photographs and write up their accompanying stories. With the help of GoFundMe, we can give Vainqueur the tools and the opportunity to possibly become self-sufficient.

Let me also tell you a little bit about the Nyarugusu Refugee Camp. The camp is located in the Kigoma area 150 km from Lake Tanganyika. The camp was opened in November 1996 to host Persons of Concern fleeing conflicts in DRC. Prior to April 2015, the camp hosted 65,000 Congolese and 2,400 Burundians.

84,961 Burundians arrived between April and October 2015 were being hosted in Nyarugusu refugee camp before relocation of close to 40,000 Burundian refugees to Nduta and Mtendeli refugee camps between October 2015 and February 2016 respectively. The camp is currently performing a resettlement process that is mainly targeting Congolese who arrived in Tanzania between 1994 and 2005.

Why to help?

Helping Vainqueur would enable him to shine a light on difficulties he sees around him on a daily basis and hopefully promote change and make a difference in someone's life.

"My missions in photography have several goals and that's why I would be able to do my good without fighting the negatives. I would like to share the images that express us, give us the message.  To be an artist is to sacrifice a life for an art.  It means that I commit myself with all my body and my soul for a project without fear or taboos, but with pride, love of work and courage."
