The NS Legal Battle - Adoption vs Selling dogs

Here is my story....

Update- ALL charges withdrawn and case closed as of Dec 6-2022! Proof of innocence was provided and the crown agreed!!!

Lawyer has been retained. $5000 retainer and $225 an hr. Without going into to much detail, I am innocent and I have the evidence to back it up. Now its just going through the process which does require the lawyer. I understand not everyone can afford to donate, I ask that you please share the campaign for support and awareness. We need to do this for the dogs currently in rescue, the ones that still need us and the ones that will need us. Dogs & puppies will die without rescues like ours.

 

My name is Lisa. I am a 50 yr old mom born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Since I was old enough to walk, I have had a passion for animals.

 

In Sept 2020, I started volunteering with Furever Homes Dog Rescue of SETX (Southeast Texas). Jeanine Christian runs the rescue in Texas. I am her lead volunteer here in Atlantic Canada. Since Sept 2020 - I have built a team of volunteers in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI and NFLD who help with the paperwork and adoption process.

We facilitate adoptions of dogs in the Texas rescue. This is a not for profit rescue - meaning we do not make money. We operate in the red constantly.

 

Countless times we are told not only are we saving dogs, but we also save the families who adopt. Children with disabilities whose life is turned around because the rescue dog keeps them calm, makes them feel safe and is their best friend. The seniors who were alone and now have a companion, a reason to keep moving on. The veteren whose rescue puppy is now his service dog. The families who have come together, after their pup arrives and tell us, he/she was the missing piece they didn't even realize was missing! The list goes on.

 

The legal battle.....

 

On May 30-2022, The NS SPCA showed up at my home and advised me I was being charged with 13 counts of selling a dog in NS without a NS Health Certificate.

I have never considered myself or the rescue as selling dogs. We are saving the lives of dogs that would be otherwise killed.

As a rule follower, as a kind person trying to do good in a crazy, messed-up world - I went into complete shock.

 

Our dogs are adopted before transport and therefore are considered unaccompanied pets by CBSA, CFIA and the Canadian broker. The dogs are adopted before they arrive in NS and therefore cross into NS as owned pets. They are not being "sold" in NS. All of our dogs are seen by a Texas vet and receive the US-issued Health Certificate within 72 hrs before arriving in Canada. We follow all CBSA and CIFA rules as they apply to unaccompanied pets entering Canada.

 

For the next few days, I felt broken. My faith in humanity dwindled. I began to question my existence, how could we bring so much joy to people, do so much good and yet the universe does this. As I pick my self up and recover from the shock, I realize, I have to fight, I have to fight for all the dogs who will die without us, for all of the families who need us.

I know we have a case, but I need a lawyer. I need a lawyer to represent all the dogs we save and me. I have not been able to find a lawyer willing to take us on pro bono nor one familiar with this type of situation. It seems I am somewhat in the middle of a unprecedented case.

 

That means legal bills that I have no means to pay.

 

Every dollar donated will go toward the legal bills and if there is any left over the funds - they will go directly to helping saving more dogs
