Hello and welcome to our crowd-funding page for our short film The Monster From The Deep, a coming of age/adventure tale co-written and co-directed by Barry Murphy and Elisa Rosciglioni.

THE STORY

County Wexford, Ireland, 1891. Michael, 12 years old, works on his family’s farm, like any other day. That is until his free-spirited best friend Timothy rushes up to his house and tells him that there is talk of a whale beached on a strand nearby. Captivated by the rumours, the pair take off to see if the stories are true. The boys traverse fields and woodlands, sustained by their imaginative theories on what the whale will be like - the size, colour and sounds of this foreign wonder. They share stolen meals and makeshift camps as their friendship blossoms on this once-in-a lifetime adventure that will leave a lasting mark on both of them.

This is a poetic adventure film that explores themes of childhood, friendship and innocence. Michael and Timothy walked the road together and shared a formative experience, but in the aftermath, their paths begin to diverge.

WHY THIS FILM?

This story is interwoven with a wonderful and often forgotten piece of Wexford local history. In 1891, a blue whale was indeed stranded in Wexford Harbour. After struggling there for two days, she was eventually harpooned and sold for her blubber and oil. The Natural History Museum of London then purchased the skeleton of the whale and to this day, the whale hangs above the main hall of the museum. Her name is Hope. Millions of people pass under her each year, oblivious to her origins in a small coastal town in Ireland. This story aims to reclaim this incredible piece of local history.

Even though the short is ingrained in Irish history, it also has indisputable international appeal. The themes of friendship and childhood are universal - they are the very thing that brought this international team together. The story is also steeped in love and respect for the natural world which taps into the global climate emergency we face today.

LA STORIA

Contea di Wexford, Irlanda, 1891. Come ogni giorno, Michael, 12 anni, sta lavorando nella fattoria della sua famiglia, fino a quando il suo migliore amico Timothy, 12 anni, dallo spirito libero, corre a casa sua raccontandogli che si vocifera di una balena arenata su una spiaggia vicina. Affascinati dai racconti, i due ragazzi si mettono in cammino per scoprire se le voci sono vere. Attraversano campi e boschi, alimentati dalla loro immaginazione su come sarà la balena - la grandezza, il colore e i suoni di questa creatura straordinaria. Condividono pasti rubati e accampamenti improvvisati mentre la loro amicizia cresce in questa avventura straordinaria che lascerà un segno indelebile su entrambi.

Questo è un poetico film d'avventura che esplora i temi dell'infanzia, dell'amicizia e dell'innocenza. Michael e Timothy percorrono insieme questa strada e condividono un'esperienza formativa, ma, dopo ciò, le loro strade iniziano a divergere.

PERCHÉ QUESTO FILM?

Questa storia si intreccia con un meraviglioso e spesso dimenticato episodio della storia locale di Wexford, dove, nel 1891, una balenottera azzurra si arenò davvero nel porto. Dopo aver sofferto per due giorni, fu arpionata e venduta per il suo grasso e il suo olio. Il Museo di Storia Naturale di Londra acquistò poi lo scheletro della balena che, ancora oggi, è sospeso sopra la sala principale del museo. Ogni anno, milioni di persone passano sotto alla balena, ignari delle sue origini in una piccola cittadina costiera irlandese. Il nostro progetto vuole recuperare questo incredibile pezzo di storia locale.

Anche se il cortometraggio affonda le radici nella storia irlandese, ha un innegabile richiamo internazionale. I temi dell'amicizia e dell'infanzia sono universali: sono proprio questi che hanno unito il nostro team multiculturale. La storia è anche permeata di amore e rispetto per la natura, toccando così il tema della crisi climatica che affrontiamo oggigiorno.
