THE MIRACLE OF MADELYN
Some of you may have found yourself in a hospital, waiting for a doctor and any word… And in a field of medicine and machines, sometimes a doctor has to reconcile a tragedy with light and says, “…She shouldn’t be here. Let me reiterate- this is a miracle.”
On behalf of my family and hers, and dear friends, I’m coming to you for MADELYN TILLIS, my brother Sonny’s wife, the Dendy sister, our sister-in-law, a best friend to so many.
4 weeks ago now- on Friday, August 14th- Madelyn fell on stairs at their home. Unconscious and not breathing, she was life-flighted to the hospital where she was revived and underwent immediate surgery for a life threatening brain bleed and swelling. At 4 weeks, we continue to learn the roller coaster phases of a TBI- traumatic brain injury. The miracle is that she did wake up, and she is graded daily through a scale called the Glasgow Coma scale. There are many layers to her responses and recognition. There are great days of amazing and joyful progress and days they say are progress, but we see her real struggle. And that is where we are.
This is a long haul. The brain is the slowest thing to heal. So while we take one day at a time so not to get overwhelmed, we have to look at the big picture and pray she gets ‘there.’ SHE IS A MIRACLE - they tell us every day. She is a fighter and tough! All in that little 4’ 11” body! And we miss her and want her to be well and to come home. So in that we ask for your help in constant prayer, visualizations, light a candle- however you get it done! Please do that, knowing she receives it and it works!!!
And also critically needed is financial assistance. Without stepping on the political soapbox and the unfortunate place our health care and insurance leaves us… we can have coverage and still have massive holes or no coverage! It’s stunning. And for a long term game plan and rehabilitation- think months and years if we are so lucky- it’s financially decimating. PERIOD. One helicopter ride was $41,000. She has been in the trauma ward with ventilation for 4 weeks now, had countless CT scans and 2 surgeries… again, we are only in week 4.
It will not be possible without help. Any contribution you can make and constant love is where we need you. It all counts. I’ve seen doctors and nurses laughing and cheering with us at her surprising responses. She has given us faith when it could have so easily been lost. It is our greatest purpose right now to love her through and to the other side of this.
With all the love and gratitude we have- thank you. Please share this with as many possible and we will update you often. There is strength in numbers and we are so fortunate to be able to humbly ask for help. A huge lesson in vulnerability. And in that vulnerable place the heart becomes the most open to receive. LOVE HEALS. We love you, Madelyn.
