For six long years, I was fighting to get a dog named Sadie. I first heard through whispers—an acquaintance of a friend was getting a dog from a family who no longer wanted her. My heart clenched instantly—red flags blazed in my mind. He couldn’t even take care of himself, let alone a fragile life like hers.
That man was fighting demons —hoarding, neglect, heavy drug addictions, a reckless disregard for his own health and well-being. There was no violence, no physical harm (towards her anyways), but some pretty serious issues of neglect.
I heard stories—gut-wrenching stories—and I couldn’t stay silent. Three times, I called animal welfare. They showed up, once with police, but they weren't home.
Spring 2023, everything changed. A call from a friend shattered my heart—Sadie’s owner was hospitalized. Sadie, abandoned again, was left with someone claiming she was limping and unwell. I rushed to his house, dreading what I might find. There she was—dirty, trembling, high, eyes haunted. Yet, miraculously, physically intact. My heart broke into a thousand pieces.
I scooped her into my arms, took her home, bathed her, and brought her to the vet. We got her the care she desperately needed—vaccines, microchip—her tiny body detoxed, and she blossomed into a radiant little lady, full of life and hope.
Meanwhile, her owner was out of the hospital, trembling with anger and heartbreak. Legally, she was his. Under the law, she is viewed as property. I devised a plan—one I believed could save her. I asked only for him to clean his space, seek help through NA, and build a network of caring people to watch over her if he needed hospital time. I believed in him—believed she deserved a chance at stability.
But hope faded. Months passed, and he did nothing. He asked to see her, and I was hesitant but thought it might give him inspiration to follow through with what I asked. The moment she saw him, you could tell that she loved him, that she missed him. It hurt to see but in that moment I felt like I was doing something wrong. I was keeping them away from each other and they clearly missed and loved each other.
So, I made the painful choice— I returned her to him, with references to free programs that could sustain her—food assistance, low-cost vet care, resources for those in need, to prevent neglect again, to give her a better future. I warned him—neglect is a dangerous path that could cost him so much more.
Months later, I saw her again. A friend of the owner was walking her near me and gave me a call. Her coat was matted, her scent was raw, her eyes wild with fear, her body high and paranoid. My stomach clenched—I knew she’d suffered. I filed another report, desperately hoping for some salvation.
I feared I’d never see her again. My heart was heavy, carrying the weight of helplessness—until March 8th, when I received a call: her owner was hospitalized again, gravely ill, and this time, he was ready to let go. He asked me to give Sadie a chance. My spirit soared—finally, a glimmer of hope.
I brought her home—the once abandoned girl, now dirty, smelling of hardship, yet alive—radiant with resilience. Over the next days, I watched her detox, heal, and begin to trust again. Slowly, her paranoia faded, replaced by a spark of joy.
She became my everything—my loyal companion. I took her everywhere, every walk, every moment, showering her with love, feeding her with the finest food, dressing her in tiny jackets that made her feel safe. We laughed, we loved, and she found her happiness again—all because I refused to give up on her. And she, in turn, showed me that even in the darkest storms, love can light the way.
On Wednesday, April 30th, my world shattered into pieces. I woke up to the heart-wrenching sight of Sadie suffering from seizures, her tiny body trembling with pain. Panic overtook me as I rushed her to the hospital, my heart pounding with fear and desperation. When they asked for an $800 deposit, I scraped together every penny I could, pleading silently for a miracle. They brought in the vet, and with a heavy voice, he told me Sadie was in a coma—her life hanging by a fragile thread. They had to admit her to the ICU, and I was told I’d need another $5,000 deposit to admit her.
That amount is an impossible mountain I can't climb. I reached out to my bank, hoping for a lifeline—applied for a loan, a line of credit, but was coldly denied every time. I even tried a predatory loan, only to be turned away, leaving me feeling more helpless than ever. I’ve never been taught how to handle finances, I never learned about credit or debt, and now that ignorance is tearing us apart. Debt terrifies me; I don’t even own a credit card because to me, that’s just another nightmare of owing more than I can pay. But because of that, I have no credit in my name—no way to access the help Sadie desperately needs. On top of that, I never thought I'd see her again, I didn't have time to save, to prepare. They were talking about the cost blood tests, anesthesia, oxygen, just staying in the hospital.
In the depths of despair, they called in animal services. Usually, they cover the bills and then adopt the pet out—losing all ownership in the process. The kind-hearted man I’ve been working with is truly compassionate. He has given me a sliver of hope, offering to allow me to pay the vet bills within 15 days of the final amount—an opportunity I cling to desperately.
The worst part about this is I can't just worry about Sadie and focus on her recovery, I have to think and spend energy on coming up with money to get her the care she needs to survive.
