Friends of fiercely independent journalism, we need your help!
We haven’t asked you, our readers, for financial support since around 2016, the last year we had staff. The Media Co-op wasn’t very active then. But in the years following, slowly but surely, we began making a comeback. And through 2019-20, we came back strong! Now, simply put, to continue this hard but important work that’s run entirely on volunteer labour, we need more money!
We’d like to ask you to consider making a donation to the Media Co-op to help us with the costs we continue to incur like rent (for a mailing address and storage), web hosting fees, and accounting fees. But most importantly, your money will largely go towards better paying our team of dedicated freelance journalists – which we’ve already been doing!
In fact, despite our financial troubles, we at the Co-op have continued paying our contributors as well if not better than most other independent media outlets. If we are able to reach our financial goals, we’ll be able to take on even more stories and give contributors a pay increase.
As an almost entirely reader-supported publication, your support is essential to keep our motors going. We’re very close to launching a fully updated version of our (currently very old) website, and hope to reach our goal before then so we can take off on a strong foot.
From Indigenous rights struggles, to activist work, to looking at Canadian foreign policy with an anti-imperialist analysis, our coverage is unique in the Canadian media landscape and, we believe, just as needed as ever.
To give you an idea of what we've been doing with the little we have over the years:
In 2017, we reported on horrific abuses at Barrick mines around the world, anti-pipeline battles, the Algonquins’ fight against the Zibi condos in Ottawa and against mining in their territory, and several contributors called out the Canada 150 celebrations. In 2018, we continued following the Trans Mountain Pipeline struggle, called out Trudeau’s faux reconciliation, and covered left movements, like the Courage coalition trying to push the NDP left. In 2019, we looked into Canada's role in pushing a right-wing coup in Venezuela, grassroots movements in Guatemala and Honduras, reported on migrants rights struggles and Palestinian rights activism in Canada, exposed a corporate conflict of interest at Legal Aid Ontario, and much more.
And last year, in 2020 , the Media Co-op was busier than we’d been in years. Some of our popular articles included:
- On Canadian diplomatic complicity with the assassination of Qasem Soleimani , by Stefan Christoff
- Unmasking Trudeau’s Redface , by Russ Diabo
- Wetsuweten traditional government evicts pipeline company CGL from their unceded territory , by David Gray-Donald
- Video of Highway 16 Blockade After Gitxsan Chief Spookw Arrested , by Melissa Cox
- For Safer Better Resourced Communities Defund the Police , by Anne Victoria
- Resistance to TMX Pipeline Continues , by Mildred German
- Reclaiming the land at 1492 Land Back Lane , by Karl Dockstader
2021 has been even busier. Of particular note, we’ve run a powerful series investigating instances of deadly police violence, with several articles from Jeff Shantz, among others.
In addition to this important and unique coverage, the Media Co-op continues to be a place for newer writers to develop their skills and get a foot into the media world.
We see a promising future for the Media Co-op and for the growing number of journalists that we introduce to media landscape.
We are so close to being able to take this work to the next level! But we can't do it without your help! Please consider donating today.
Thank you!
