The McCarty's Cancer Journey

On February 11th, 2021, I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, a form of breast cancer. Not only was I diagnosed with breast cancer, but it happened to be the most aggressive form, HER2+. I was thankful after many CT scans, bone scans and MRIs to learn that it was contained to one duct and that I had caught it early enough that it had not spread anywhere else in my body. I started chemo on March 31st, 2021 and what a journey that was. By the end of the 3rd round, my body felt like it was shutting down, and I walked into my nurse's office and sobbed. I told her there was no way I could complete three more rounds of this horrible stuff, but I knew if I didn't, I wouldn't be around for my husband, daughter and the rest of my family. I decided that I wanted to get my genetics tested to see if I was a carrier of any cancer-causing gene, and sure enough, I tested positive for the BRCA2 gene, a gene that puts you at high risk for breast-ovarian and skin cancer. What I thought was going to be a simple lumpectomy surgery quickly turned into the decision to have a double mastectomy and the decision to have a full hysterectomy by the time I am 40. After my last round of chemo, I let my body heal for about a month and then, on August 24th, 2021, I had my double mastectomy. I am thankful to say I'm now cancer-free! I have three more infusions of a maintenance medicine called Herceptin, which blocks the HER2 receptors and shortly after I'm done that, I will get my port out and be closely monitored for the next several years. Unfortunately, my husband and I are swimming in a sea of medical debt because of all these infusions, scans and MRIs; this was not the way we wanted to spend our first year of marriage. The stress of these medical bills coming in is hard on both of us. As hard as it is to ask for help, something Tyler and I have never been good at, we are asking for any kind of donation you might be able to send our way. We are so very thankful for the support of this community and have been paying it forward as best we can. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
