Dear Friends, Family & Community,
I’m reaching out to ask for your support raising funds for the extracurricular enrichment club I created for my 10th grade students from Promise Academy 1, a charter school in my Central Harlem community, where I started teaching culinary arts, nutrition and yoga.
I created the Lunch & Culture Club to offer my students, who are all girls, opportunities for hands-on learning in food culture and the arts, and to provide them a safe, supported space to socialize outside of school.
It has been a privilege to connect with these smart, funny, creative teens and troubling to see how their school’s woeful lack of funding and leadership means that they almost never get to experience the lessons, trips or activities intended for them.
Because of COVID, more than half of my students’ high school experience has been lived from inside their bedrooms. They haven’t gotten to build a student community, explore beyond the walls of their school, or benefit from NYC, the global classroom that’s sitting right in their backyard!
The Lunch & Culture Club gathers once a month for a themed educational outing. We go to museums the students have never visited and eat foods they’ve never tried. Students are lighting up as they soak in these new experiences and they’re eager for more involvement.
Over the summer, I aim to expand club offerings to include:
-Cooking classes
-Yoga classes
-Sponsored internship & volunteer opportunities
The out-of-pocket cost of facilitating these experiences is far out of reach for me, but with your help, these students will have a chance to learn essential life skills, deepen their areas of interest and multiply their global literacy.
With this donation, you are making unique learning experiences possible for a group of bright young women who lack access to the opportunities they deserve.
Every donation matters.
My students and I thank you for this meaningful contribution.
With love + gratitude,
Emelyn Daly
