The Lucius DeShawn Wade Scholarship

Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, Lucius always had a proclivity to stand up for social justice and fight for democracy. While attending college in New York, Lucius felt the call to political action and left school to work for and elect the first Black president of the United States, Barack Obama. He’d go on to work for other political campaigns including Elizabeth Warren for Senate and Hillary Clinton for President.
Lucius went back to school at UMass Boston to finish a double degree in political science and secondary education. He had a goal to combine his passion for politics and his hope for a better future by becoming a history teacher to empower the next generation of justice seekers and democracy fighters.
Before he finished his degrees, Lucius tragically took his own life on July 4th, 2020.
In Lucius' legacy, he'll leave The Lucius DeShawn Wade Scholarship at UMass Boston to encourage those struggling to access a career in politics, social justice and people-powered movements to seek a degree in political science that will ultimately equip young people with the tools they need to pave a career in the field.
