The literacy of our youth
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Ama, and I am fundraising for The Appleseed Preschool in Pahokee, FL.
Pahokee is the 3rd poorest city in Florida, with a population of primarily Black and Hispanic residents (over 80%). Linda Baker-Reynolds, the Founder of the Appleseed, decided to start a preschool that focuses on literacy through a Montessori approach. Linda always said, "If you want to resolve generational poverty, focus on education."
With over 40 years of experience working with children, Linda noticed that many middle and high school children had literacy deficiencies, so she decided to focus on the formative years, 2 - 5 years old, to help prepare the students for elementary school. She also has an after-school care program for elementary and middle school students.
Linda wanted to provide the Appleseed kids with a transformative experience through love, activities and learning through fun. I was inspired by her mission of "planting seeds of excellence," especially when I walked into the beautiful building and saw her engaging with the students. This entire project has been self-funded, and she needs help! I want to help because I love what she's doing for the community. I want to invest in our black and brown kids to change the trajectory of their lives.
According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, 2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the fourth grade will end up in jail or on welfare. 85% of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally low literate. By investing in the Appleseed, you are investing in our future.
I had already donated to the Appleseed when I asked Linda, "If I was a genie that could grant you anything, what would you need?" Below is her response.
1. "I need an extra teacher. That person doesn't need credentials because I provide on-the-job training. They just need a passion for children. I can't grow the headcount without an extra teacher because I don't want the ratio to go over one teacher to every eight students to cater to the children's physical and academic needs." (The Appleseed starts wages at $15.00/hr)
2. "I need a part-time social media person to help advertise The Appleseed. Marketing has changed so much over the years, and I need an expert."
3. "I need books for kids ages 2-13 years old.
4. "Once I get more books, I need more bookcases."
5. "I also need more boy toys, puzzles, Montessori games, tricycles, and school supplies."
One last thing, she doesn't know I am starting a GoFundme. I want it to be a surprise. This is totally a Millennial helping a Boomer out. She needs help, and I want to build a community of support for the Appleseed. The funds will support teachers' salaries, hire a social media person, purchase books, and provide educational supplies.
Every dollar counts. This impoverished community needs you.
