The Life of a Family Changed Due to Cancer

In June of 2022, the lives of the Lane household changed drastically. What was dismissed by a dentist for months, eventually led Charlie Lane to wake to the sight of blood on his pillow. Upon further evaluation, it was discovered that Charlie had a tumor in his head and neck region. Initially, the doctors at KU expected a great prognosis with the appropriate course of treatment, but they were unfortunately proven wrong. Charlie underwent 6 cycles of chemotherapy along with 33 radiation treatments. He has had to endure countless side effects, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations. He has been unable to eat by mouth for over a year, receiving nutrition through a feeding tube. Due to the location of the tumor, he has also undergone a tracheostomy. After being defeated by all these measures intended to shrink the tumor and kill the cancer cells, the doctors turned to Immunotherapy. But, unfortunately, Charlie did not respond and the tumor progressed. Now, the only hope of the Lane family is to receive medical attention at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. My sister Mindy, Charlie’s wife, is and has been the definition of a devoted wife and mother through it all. She has been by Charlie’s side through his treatments and complications, all while trying to maintain a “normal” life for their 2 boys Landon (15) and Grayson (9). Despite her continuous efforts, their life is far from normal. Charlie’s diagnosis did not just affect him; it has impacted his whole family. I have witnessed the sacrifices made by his wife, the instillation of fear in his children, and the overall deterioration of hope by all. For the last year and half, I have felt so helpless to their situation. I know the emotional and financial strain that seeking care hundreds of miles away from home will cause them. My sister, my best friend, would never ask for help, so here I am asking for her. This is not a Go Fund ME, but a Go Fund THEM, for any donation will hopefully help their heartbreaking situation.
