"THE LENS" is an immersive interactive art installation returning to Burning Man 2022.
"THE LENS” is a playful inquiry into the unknown which allows us to experience the infinity of our many Selves. Participants are enticed to escape the constraints of linear time and singular identity while being confronted with a game of 'trust' when they enter the self-locking door. Twenty-seven full-length mirrored panels encircle you creating a fractal reflection network that reveals the many un-seeable sides of self. Seeing for the first time, the totality of our Being.
THE LENS can remove us from our current identity restrictions and is an invitation to remember our ever-infinite potential. When faced with the reality of our own infinity, we are invited to explore our own unknown. “Seeing is believing” prompts an opportunity to see any Self you desire, wish, hope, dream, or aspire to be. Emerge from the freedom of the infinite a new, renewed you.
Can we come to understand that to change the smallest part is to change the nature of the universe as a whole? What will you see through your lens?
As an immersive experience encouraging spontaneity, a diverse range of people can play with reflections, find their way in and out of the installation like a puzzle, dance, meditate, or hold a ceremony, class or party inside.
Burners can also examine the symbolism behind the piece and explore the alternative philosophical perspectives provoked by the writings outside the walls. Playful conversation, healthy debate, and potentially challenging self-inquiry trigger individuals to explore their deeper selves.
Physical, emotional, metaphorical and spiritual levels of interactivity create personal art that is not merely observed. Instead, the art is internalized; visual expressions, life discussions and storytelling become creative revalations in themselves.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
After successfully installing THE LENS at Burning Man 2019, the key portion of the project is built - made possible by the hard work of an amazing team of volunteer artists, the support of the Burning Man community and beyond.
We need your help to bring this project to fruition once again!
100% of funds raised will go directly towards upgrading the lighting and audio components of the installation, remaining supplies for the build, and transportation to the playa, Black Rock City, Nevada.
- New solar lighting for exterior & interior (high output solar LED spotlights, rope lights & batteries): $1,150
- Upgraded audio components (headphones, music players, solar charging for sound): $850
- Transportation (2x trailer hire, Van hire & insurance): $1,600 - this doesn't include gas which our crew is generously donating!
- Fastenings, tools & generator use $1,100
- Paint for new exterior art panels $300
THE LENS is led by artist Lauren Kilb who created and brought the project to fruition in 2019. She has worked on other large-scale interactive Burning Man projects, including Rebecca Waites' honoraria grant project "Singularity" in 2018 and most recently worked for Burning Man Project to bring the Virtual Burn to life via the online platform Kindling. Of course, this can only happen in collaboration with an awesome crew of artists from her local art community and studios, Location 1980.
We are a collective of explorers, philosophers and artists that have adopted a playful exploration of the unknown. We believe in a single idea being able to ripple out and create positive change far beyond our immediate understanding.
This is a campaign for ALL OF US!
To connect with and inspire one another while we collaborate to bring more interactive art into our communities, spreading joy to everyone who contributes!
THANK YOU for being here!
EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS! If you resonate with our philosophy or project idea, please share and help us spread it. The power of crowdfunding runs on a "trending" campaign, and each share, like and follow will help reach more contributors!
Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for taking an interest in THE LENS project. WE CAN ONLY DO THIS BECAUSE OF YOU :D ♥ )'(
