The Last DIY Show - Short Film Post-Production

Donation protected
When a zombie apocalypse breaks out at a punk show, young show photographer Dahlia, her friends, and ex-boyfriend must band together to make it out alive.

Dahlia, a young concert photographer in the punk scene, arrives to the show like it’s any other night, and finds out her ex Xavier’s band ‘Bitch Wagon’ is headlining. She finds solace in her friends, but little do they know that evil ex-boyfriends are gonna be the least of their concerns. She accepts an experimental drug from her best friend Clay to take the edge off, but after a freak chemical reaction inside Clay's body, the mosh pit becomes a blood bath, and a zombie outbreak begins. A slightly stoned Dahlia and her punk friends need to find their way out of the venue in order to save themselves and the future of DIY shows (and the world, I GUESS).

Our Vision

The film itself is a statement of DIY defiance, a film built with practical effects and shot on 16mm film, to combat the rise of “AI filmmaking”, to protect the tangible, beautiful, and human things about film. How humanity is the most important part of filmmaking, and what better way than to shoot on film with the collaborative efforts of a team of young people getting their start in the film industry.

The Cinematography is noisy, with bright and flashing lights. It feels like being too high on a night out. The 16mm also lends to the zombie aspects, with using practical gore affects, the noise of 16mm can really lend to making something feel real and scary. As well as it being beautiful. Lots of homages to"The Doom Generation"or "Return Of The Living Dead"

With almost an entirely queer/female/nonbinary key crew, we were able to create a very professional and collaborative work enviroment. Everyone who worked on the film/ gave their time/ resources, and so much earnest effort into the production of this short film. So many people and gave their time just for the love of the game/ just to be able to shoot on film.

We were able to create this film for less than $5,000, and now we only need a bit more to make it a reality!

Director’s Statement

This film is my love letter to Canadian DIY culture, the underbelly of the music scene where people are allowed to do as they please and be who they are. This film highlights the unsung roles of the people who facilitate these essential community environments, the people working the door, sound technicians, show photographers, people who actually DIY the show and make it happen. It’s also about the interpersonal relationships that form as a result of these shows, the fallout of these relationships, and what would happen if these people found themselves on the cusp of the zombie apocalypse. The way that DIY scenes save the world every day in their small defiances, of choosing to persevere in the face of world ending circumstance. If i had to pick anyone to help me survive a zombie apacolypse, it would be the people running these spaces. They've seen it all, and keep coming back.

This film is also important to me in terms of technical elements, as we were able to achieve a lot of practical effects while shooting on 16mm. We rigged a blood cannon, had multiple intricate zombies, as well as other practical gags. I believe that the 16mm serves these practical effects in that way, the grain allows the effects to have a grainy cover that makes it feel all the more real. You don't need VFX/AI to make films.

Contribute To Our Film

Now in a post production haze we need your help!
To bring TLDS back to life, get our film processed + other fun post production responsibilities, we are hoping to do a spot of crowdfunding to get us through the last stretch.

Supporting this project means supporting a group of young filmmakers who did it for the love of the game, to shoot practically with human beings, tangible film, and live music. Supporting girls in film who built this project out of nothing. This is the way to change the future of the film industry and showing that analogue matters.

I want to watch movies made by people. That feel like they have a soul.
If you wanna support movies made by human beings, that poured as much heart as they could into this, I would be eternally grateful.

If you contribute any amount to the film, you will receive a thank you in the credits. And my eternal thanks.

If you feel so inclined to contribute $2500+, you will receive an executive producer credit.
