Last week, Taite Kirkpatrick, a high school freshman, traveled with the Mount Vernon Speech and Debate team to the National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. There, they got incredibly sick, and needed to be taken to the emergency room. They were quickly transfered to the local Children's Hospital, where they were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Taite's mom (Kelley) and sister (Peri) had to overhaul their trip, staying in Kentucky until they were ready for release--and this has incurred all kinds of unexpected expense--hospital bills, hotel rooms, rental cars, flights, etc. Additionally, Kelley has had to delay her summer job at a debate camp, reducing the family's expected income. Further, Taite will continue to require insullin to help manage this new diagnosis.
We are fundraising to help cover the Kirkpatrick's medical and logistical costs. The medical costs are ongoing and the need is urgent, so we are establishing $5,000 as a goal, as it would help the family reach their insurance's deductible.
If you or anyone you love has had a positive experience in Washington Speech and Debate over the last several years, the Kirkpatricks are a part of that experience. Coaching is a labor of love, and dedicated coaches like Kelley end up earning pennies an hour--few do it better, and deeply impact more young people than Kelley. ANY assistance you can lend is sincerely appreciated. Thank you!!
