About Me

My name is Katelyn Hubbard, and I’m a 16 year-old student at Oakton High School in Virginia. In the Fall of 2024, I fulfilled a dream by summiting Mount Kilimanjaro with my dad and my Uncle Jonathan. It was an unforgettable experience because of the incredible people who made it possible the 45 local porters who carried our equipment, guided us, and supported us every step of the way.

Why I'm Starting This Project

During the climb, I was moved by the porters’ incredible strength, dedication, and kindness, despite facing real challenges themselves. Many of them wore worn out shoes and socks on one of the toughest treks in the world, but they always greeted us with smiles, encouraged us when we struggled, and showed extraordinary professionalism throughout the journey. Their perseverance left a lasting impact on me.

My Goal

I’ve launched The Kilimanjaro Soles Project to give back to the people who made my dream possible. My goal is to raise enough funds to purchase 45 pairs of high quality hiking boots and socks for the porters who supported our climb. With your help, we can ensure these hardworking individuals have the gear they need to do their jobs safely and comfortably.

I’ve already partnered with Francis Sangawe, the lead guide from Nyota Africa Adventures, to gather a full list of the porters' names and shoe sizes. Your donation will go directly toward purchasing and delivering this much needed equipment.
