On my trip to Ghana, Jupiter was one of the first students I got to meet. We were each paired off with a Trinity Yard School (TYS) boy in order to learn some Ghanaian words. While learning the Fante language from Jupiter, I was shocked by his intelligence and how well he knew the English language.
Throughout the trip we talked about his family and his dream of getting an education in the United States. I learned that he was not originally from Cape Three Points like the other school boys, but was recruited to join the school.
He had to travel far from home to attend TYS and had not seen his family in years in order to get this opportunity for an education. We learned that only $40 US dollars would get him on a roundtrip bus ride to his hometown to see his family. All of the camp members pitched in $2 and we watched as he called his parents on the phone and informed them that he would be coming home for the first time in years.
It was in this moment that I realized the sacrifices Jupiter had made for his education and how important his education was to him.
As I was leaving Ghana, I learned that he was going to have to stop attending school because he no longer had the funds. A few months later, I reached out to Jupiter and began fundraising for his high school expenses.
Through fundraisers and donations I have been able to pay for his last 2 years of high school. Last summer, I successfully enrolled him in Central University College in Accra. He has now been accepted into KNUST one of the top colleges in Africa and will begin there in the fall!!
