Do you remember that elementary school teacher who changed your life, seemed to understand you when no one else did or made you ask better questions/seek better answers? I was lucky enough to work with just such an amazing educator, who later became a dear friend. Judy Carlisle was the embodiment of Miss Frizzle and STEAM before STEAM. She taught with her whole heart and soul, guiding young minds with love, kindness and humor. Science, History, Math, Art, Literature, it was all an adventure for Mrs. Carlisle, and sometimes she didn't use a road map! She taught hundreds of students during her long career at David Lubin Elementary School and many would drop by years later to visit her and update her on their life.
Tucked into a charming East Sac bungalow with her two sons (who were her greatest joy) she lived a quiet home life. She traveled, attended operas, supported local theater and kept in touch with friends. An avid reader, she did not own a TV but instead stacks and stacks of books on most evenings were her entertainment.
When she retired from teaching she continued to attend school talent shows, pasta dinners, volunteer at Sutter Fort and the Garden Tour and sometimes on her daily walk would pop by the campus to say hi.
Following her dream of retiring in the country she moved from her East Sac cottage and built a farmhouse in Washington State just outside of Portland. She made new community connections and enjoyed the natural beauty of her country retreat.
Sadly her retirement years were cut short by cancer and after less than 6 months from the diagnosis she passed away, December 2018. Learning of the news all who knew and loved Judy were heartbroken.
How do you thank someone who gave selflessly and tirelessly to so many and made the world a better place for everyone? Sometimes I catch myself in a teaching situation thinking "What would Judy do?"It has taken us a while to figure out just how we would like to honor this amazing woman for a lifetime of community service.
Judy promoted literature in her class was an avid personal reader and an active book club member, we hope she would be proud to continue sharing this love of the printed word with the school and our community. This spring David Lubin Elementary School is going to dedicate a Little Free Library to the Marvelous Mrs. Judy Carlisle. Our Kinder-3rd grade students are already hard at work creating the design and our 4th-6th grade students will draw up the blueprints. The proposal must be able to house novels as well as large picture books, be weatherproof and easily student accessible. We will be referring to the the national Little Free Library site for guidelines and to register our library once it is completed. In true STEAM fashion this student driven project will be constructed of at least 50% recycled/reused materials.
To make this project possible we are asking for funds to cover building materials, installation, registration, promotion and maintenance.
Any additional funds raised will go towards scholarships for the 6th grade Science Camp trip.
Judy Carlisle was a very special individual who gave so much and always found a unique way to share knowledge, we hope this Little Free Library will continue to keep her connecting and changing lives for years to come.
We love you Mrs. Carlisle and miss you!
