Tyler and Caitlin’s son Carter was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia back in March 2017.  This past year has been riddled with trips to CHaD and Boston Children’s Hospital- Dana Farber Center.  He  was diagnosed back in March 2017 and didn’t even turn 2 years old until June 2017.  There have been several week long stays in the hospital with platelet and blood transfusions, a bone marrow biopsy and even a PICC line in his arm.  Carter has been on immunosuppressants since June. He goes to Boston Children’s Hospital-Dana Farber Center at least once a week to have labs taken so they can monitor his platelet count, red blood cell count, etc.  Based on those numbers, he gets the necessary transfusions.  Unfortunately, the immunosuppressants are not working as well as the doctors would have liked and they are now getting ready for a Bone Marrow Transplant.  The transplant is tentatively being scheduled for the middle of February.  The Bone Marrow Transplant is a cure but it unfortunately opens up the door for complications associated with any transplant.  It will require Carter to be hospitalized in Boston for a minimum of 4 weeks with home care and weekly followups for six months to a year.  Before they can do the transplant, he will have to go through chemotherapy.

The craziest part of it is that Carter does NOT look sick….other than the fact that his body is NOT able to maintain platelet and blood levels and the PICC line in his arm, he looks and acts just like a healthy 2 ½ year old!!  Just another reason why chemo is going to be so hard for the whole family.

Tyler and Caitlin both work but both will run out of time with the hospitalization.  The last thing either of them should be worried about is making sure they can get to work to make the money they need to pay everyday bills.  No one should ever have to go through this with their child but my hope is that this page will allow them to focus solely on Carter’s health by being able to be all together as a family during this difficult time.

Any support you can give will be greatly appreciated and please keep this family in your hearts and prayers.
