Hi, I’m Noah Sokolsky, director of the Chapman thesis short film, “The In-Between Place”

The In-Between Place is a horror short film about the atrocities of child neglect. Katie, our 12-year-old main character, acts as a caregiver to the only adult that lives in her house, her grandmother with Alzheimer’s. The traumatizing death of her grandmother sends Katie over the edge, entering what can only be described as a place between reality and dreams. Now completely alone, Katie finds herself trapped in an amalgamation of the worst places to be abandoned as a kid… all while a monster stalks her from the shadows.

The In-Between Place rejects the cliches and stereotypes of the horror genre, which has come to favor style over substance or cheap scares. It is more than just a horror movie— it’s an exploration of guilt, denial, neglect, and abandonment from the perspective of a child. Some of the things Katie must endure would traumatize anyone, let alone a 12-year-old girl.

This movie is heavily inspired by analog horror, a subgenre focused on low-fidelity graphics, cryptic messages, and visual styles reminiscent of late 20th-century television. Combined with the uncanny imagery of “liminal spaces” and 2D animation, The In-Between Place intends to tap into the terror of being abandoned in a familiar yet unfamiliar place with the imagination of a child.

It has been four years of comprehensive training that I have been waiting for this opportunity. Countless days and nights planning and dreaming about every aspect of this film have finally brought me to this point— and now, I need your help.
