Mark Hummon passed away unexpectedly on June 14. An amazing and beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, he was deeply loved by his family, friends, coworkers, and everyone in his life. He inspired so many people to pursue their dreams and overcome obstacles.
Mark had a never-ending thirst for knowledge, with two bachelor’s degrees in computer science and graphic design from UMBC, a master’s degree in computer science, and working on a second master’s degree in machine learning, both from Johns Hopkins. He knew countless computer languages, studied physics and advanced mathematics, and loved to theorize about the universe. He had an incredibly successful career, achieved a senior position with a wonderful company, and was often the lead software engineer on major projects. He was very enthusiastic about the projects he was working on and put his all into his work. His family was incredibly proud of everything he achieved with his education and career.
Mark could accomplish anything he put his mind to. He was a snowboarder, rock climber, mountaineer, backpacker, mountain biker, mechanic, arborist, home remodeler, video gamer, computer and coding pro. There was nothing he couldn’t figure out, and everything he did, he did to perfection. He built the life he always dreamed of, with a loving wife, amazing kids, tools, gadgets, and video games galore, a great job, two huge dogs, and a motorcycle he said goodnight to every night. I mean, every night.
Mark's family was his everything. He cherished his family, soaked in every moment with his wife and children. He loved sharing adventures with his kids--rock climbing with Skyler, mountain biking with Oaklen, wrestling, playing tickle monster, coloring, telling stories, playing video games and watching movies together. He did everything with Julie--designing and remodeling the house, taking woodworking classes, hiking, rock climbing, working on the yard, pushing each other to take classes to further their careers, and making plans for their future. Mark and Julie were together for 16 years, and they always supported each other, challenged each other, and grew themselves and their relationship together. And the bond between Mark and Julie’s families grew as a result of his and Julie’s love for each other. That love, support, and connection between the families will live on in his memory.
Mark is survived by his wife Julie, children Oaklen (6) and Skyler (4), parents Tim and Charlotte, sister Lisa and her family, Julie’s parents, Bob and Susan, and siblings, Jessica, Robby, and Poppy, and their families. Mark will be remembered as a loving, generous, caring, thoughtful, intelligent, fun, funny, adventurous soul, and will be missed by us all.
