The House That Welcomed Everyone: Help the Flahertys

The Story

Late last night, on November 25th, the Flaherty family faced an unimaginable tragedy. My in-laws, Karen and Michael Flaherty, lost their home in Holliston to a devastating fire. While we are so grateful that every person made it out safely; the house—and everything inside it—is a total loss.

One of the most heartbreaking losses is of my SIL's dog, Lucy. She did not survive the fire, and she is being grieved deeply by all of those in the family.

I have been part of the family for almost 15 years now. From the very first day I walked into the Flaherty home, I learned what their "Open Door Policy" really meant. It wasn't just a saying; it was a way of life.

For decades, Karen and Michael have been the safety net for everyone else. Whether you were a neighbor, a friend of a friend, or a relative, there was always a plate of food and a warm bed waiting for you. It is a home that has taken care of so many of us.

True to that spirit, the house was fully occupied at the time of the fire. It was serving as a true multi-generational home, with three generations of the family living under one roof. Everyone has been displaced, and everyone has lost their daily essentials, clothing, and sense of safety.

A Blow to the Holidays The timing of this tragedy is especially cruel. Karen, being the incredible Nona she is, had already done her Christmas shopping. She had bought and wrapped gifts for all 9 of her grandchildren, as well as the rest of the family.

Those gifts—along with the ornaments, the stockings, and the memories attached to them—are gone. She was so ready to celebrate with the grandkids, and it breaks my heart to see that joy taken away from her, Michael, and us all.

How You Can Help The Flahertys are the first people to help others and the last people to ask for help themselves. That is why I am organizing this for them. Right now, they are starting from absolute zero with only the clothes on their backs.

We are raising funds to help with:

- Immediate temporary housing and hotel costs for the multiple family members displaced.

- Basic necessities (clothing, toiletries, food) for the three generations of family members as they navigate the next few weeks.

- Saving Christmas: We want to help replace the gifts for the 9 grandkids so Nona & Pappy can still see that joy on Christmas morning.

- A memorial for Lucy.

Trust & Transparency My name is Lauren -- and I am organizing this fund on behalf of my in-laws in Holliston, MA. All funds raised here are linked directly to the family's bank account so Karen and Michael can access them immediately for their recovery.

I have 15 years of memories there, and I know many of you are now reminiscing about decades and decades more.

If you cannot donate, please share this link or share a memory/picture you have of the Flaherty home.

Thank you for helping the people who have always helped everyone else.

With love,
Lo
