Tourism in developing countries often does more economic harm to local communities than good. Foreign investment, hiring of foreign workers, and imported goods allow revenues to bypass local communities while the tourism activity raises the cost of living for local residents. REAL Tourism Development is a nonprofit organization that promotes travel with purpose, where tourism gives back to the local community. With your help, we plan to open a nonprofit teaching hotel that trains at-risk youth for employment in the hospitality industry and supports the growth of locally owned tourism businesses in the community.
REAL Tourism Development was created to empower communities in developing countries through the tourism industry. We are currently awaiting approval of our tax exempt status, and are in the development stage of our first project to be located in Costa Rica. At the end of 2019 Costa Rica was suffering from record high unemployment rates of 12.4% overall and over 30% in youth aged 15-24. We have found the perfect teaching hotel facility to house our onsite training center, located in a rural community that would benefit from our support services. We are fundraising now for the down payment to secure this facility immediately.
Education and Training
The teaching hotel will operate a hospitality training center to provide both formal classroom education as well as practical training and apprenticeship on location. Students will select a program from the areas of housekeeping, restaurant service, culinary, or hotel management. Graduates will be provided with a paid internship at a luxury hotel, and with assistance finding employment after the internship.
Socially Sustainable Tourism
To be socially sustainable, tourism must be REAL; responsible, ethical, authentic, and life-changing. REAL Tourism Development will provide community-based sustainable tourism projects to prevent the leakage of revenue to foreigners and instead keep it in the local communities. Your donation will help promote socially sustainable tourism in a variety of ways:
*Hospitality training centers that equip participants for employment
*Hiring of locals for the hospitality training center and teaching hotel
*Locally sourced goods for the teaching hotel
*Free English classes for the local community
*Microloans for the development of locally owned tourism businesses
*Scholarships for local students to pursue degrees in tourism or hospitality
Your Donation
80% of donations received will go directly towards the down payment for the hotel facility.
20% of donations received will be used for startup costs of forming the nonprofit organization, program operation costs, and administrative costs.
*We have applied for our 501(c)(3) federal income tax exemption but are awaiting review. Donations will not be tax deductible unless our exemption is approved before the end of 2021. Donations over $250 will receive a donation receipt by email if this occurs.
