The Hodson Student Opportunity Grant

Donation protected

In the months since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, North Central students have been given an unprecedented opportunity to create change in their community. As school returns to a new normal this quarter, many students will have fresh new ideas and plan to improve the world around them. Sophomore students will be conducting a personal project over the next few months and my initiative will be focused on giving those hoping to make lasting change some additional support.

My personal project is focused on creating the Hodson Student Opportunity Grant program that gives students the fiduciary capability to enact their ideas. Many students have top-notch ideas and a faculty advisor to help guide them, but a major obstacle that keeps them from turning those ideas into reality is funding. I need your help to change that. With a donation of at least 10 dollars, you can give a student the chance to work on a project that has the potential to help countless others. I have seen first hand how grant funding allows teacher ideas to soar, with your help we can give students the chance to soar as well. Grant applications will be made available to students working on personal projects and funding will be awarded to project expenses that show promise for making the community around them a better place.

I have been inspired during my time in Washington Township by Mr. and Mrs. Hodson, long time MSDWT teachers who inspire students daily to enact positive change in the world around them.

Emily Hodson has taught in Washington Township since 2000, working over the last decade at Allisonville in the COMPASS program. During her time at Allisonville, she has won teacher of the year twice and is always going above and beyond for her students. For example, she created a Future Problem Solvers Club where students completed projects and competed with other schools. The two teams she advised placed second and third respectively with the Recycling Rebels advancing to the national finals hosted by the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She also brought the Documentary called The Empowerment Project, which followed the lives and careers of five successful and powerful women across walks of life to MSDWT. Following the film she hosted a panel of 11 women including Sarah Fisher an indy 500 driver, Representative Christina Hale,  and Rafia Zakaria who served on the board of amnesty international from 2009 to 2015.

Andy Hodson has worked at several buildings in our district and found success in all of them. Before coming to North Central he worked at Westlane and Northview middle schools winning teacher of the year at Westlake and classified employee of the year at Northview. Through the Northviews award, he was able to participate in a fellowship at Indiana University. During his time at North Central, he has taught in the Individuals and Societies Department and was recently placed as the head of the International Baccalaureate diploma program and Advanced Placement classes. He won the North Central teacher of the year award in 2016.
