The Heroux Family's Journey to Link's Recovery

Melanie and Steve are dear friends to us and esteemed members of our local community. This GoFundMe fundraiser is being created to enable those who, like us, have been thinking about ways to help and support the Heroux Family, beyond sending them our thoughts and prayers.

Melanie and Steve are the parents of two amazing boys, ages 10 and 5. Their youngest child, Lexington (Link, for short), was born with a rare urological condition that required immediate hospitalization and transfer to the NICU at Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago. At 2 days old, Link underwent 10 hours of surgery and was placed in a spica cast to recover in the hospital and at home. In the 5 years since, he has had a total of 5 major surgeries and countless small procedures at Comer. The latest surgery, which happened on May 2, 2023, lasted over 9 hours with an expected 1-3 week hospital recovery before returning home to heal over the coming months. Because this last surgery also included an orthopedic repair; Link is once again in a full leg spica cast, with external hip fixators in place for the first half of his summer.

In the short term, Link will require a specialized car seat and wheel chair as well as many follow up visits. While the early results are promising, there is still a strong chance that future surgeries will be in order. Link still has a long road ahead, but he has shown so much resilience.

This incredibly strong and positive family has been handling this journey as gracefully as possible, and has never asked for anything other than our prayers, but as you can imagine, these major surgical procedures, long periods of time living in the hospital, and all Link’s post surgical needs, have left them with lots of unexpected and extra expenses, on top of some significant medical bills.
