The Heat is Real and the Elderly are at Risk
Hello. My name is Khristina. I have a neighbor, Don Kyker and his wife Kathy. He is almost 80 and she is over 70. She has Alzheimer's.
Don used to be my driver. I seldom drive. He was always johnny on the spot and never failed to get me to the airport on time and would pick me up at some crazy times. When Kathy was diagnosed, he stopped driving. In the past year, I have watched both of them change physically and mentally. Yesterday Don called to let me know that their air conditioning unit went out. We live in Harvest Alabama and today, it was
94 degrees, inside his house. I went to check on them today. The dogs wouldn't come out of the back room and that NEVER happens. Kathy was on the couch, completely disheveled and sweating. Don was having a hard time breathing.
By the way - the picture is not Don. I don't want to mislead anyone on anything.
Here is the thing: They have had a few different vendors come out to give them a diagnosis. I cannot believe how much they are trying to charge these guys, but I have never had to replace a central air unit. We tried to get help from TVA, but they cannot help due to the fact that
the original unit has a gas connection. They are not only on a fixed income, it is a low fixed income.
Don is an Army Veteran. I originally listed him as a Navy Vet - I apologize for the error.
I fear that this heat could be very detrimental to their waning health. If this doesn't get replaced, not only will the heat impact them, but
they wont have anything to heat the house except for the gas fire place this winter. I know they cannot afford the required replacement.
The unit is a 3 ton unit. I don't know anything about central air units, but I do know that heat exhaustion is very serious for elderly. If you
know an organization that can donate a unit, we will find someone to install it. Otherwise, we are looking for a complete replacement and
installation.
I am asking to raise $8,000 for their unit. They have been quoted as high as $12k and as low as $7k. I have not idea if this is reasonable or
not, but I will be looking for quotes and hopefully we can offset some of the costs through generosity of some HVAC organizations.
Every penny helps. Can you donate the cost of a cup of coffee? That helps! I checked in on them today and with the portable air unit that I provided them and a window unit, we have managed to cool the place down in spots. We know winter is quickly approaching and I pray
that we get rain every day until then. That helps cool things down.
I have never done anything like this and I am praying that there are folks out there who can help this wonderful couple. I love them. I hope
you will be able to help. Thank you. Sincerely, it is overwhelming all the people who have offered to help. I cannot ever thank you enough. Please contact me directly if you have any questions. Khristina Lores - [email redacted]
