Because of the disruptions that COVID-19 caused Japantown small businesses, the Japantown Community Benefit District (JCBD) launched the Heart of Jtown Small Business Resiliency Fund campaign in May of 2020 to assist our small businesses and produce/help activate events to bring more visitors to Japantown.
With the support of many generous donors we were able to raise a little over $500K to help our small businesses.
To date, money raised went towards:
- $5000 grants to 80 Japantown small businesses ($400K total) - to be used towards employee wages, rent and other operational costs
- Purchased PPE supplies (masks, hand sanitizers, sneeze guards)
- Funded the extension of Picnic in the Plaza
- Funded the Bistro Lights on the Buchanan Mall/Osaka Way
- Logistical support for Restaurants at the Plaza
- Assisted in construction costs for Shared Spaces build outs
- Funded the Heart of Jtown Mural Projects
A travel destination for visitors, the epicenter of Japanese/Japanese American culture – the survival of Japantown is in our hands.
As one of the only four remaining Japantowns in the United States, San Francisco Japantown has served as the cultural hub of the Japanese American community in San Francisco since 1906. Our small businesses, including community artists play an integral part of what makes up the cultural character and vibrancy that draws us to this special place. It’s a go to destination for many visitors and a place where locals come to shop and dine.
The Japantown Community Benefit District (JCBD) set up this GoFundMe campaign to continue soliciting donations that will go directly to support Japantown small businesses.
JCBD Board members who have business interests and who may be applying for the Fund will not serve on any committees reviewing applications or disbursing awards and fund allocation.
The JCBD is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
